Delicate seaweeds and bryozoa washed up from the chalk reef are laid onto chalk, sprinkled with soot from my chimney, and then removed, leaving their absence in the chalk. The soot laid down upon the chalk of this fragile reef puts me in front of my culpability, the damage that my actions do to the living world around me.

The Norfolk chalk reef extends 30 kilometers along the coast of north Norfolk and supports a huge variety of marine plants and animals. Its extent and diversity has only recently been discovered and recorded because it is mostly absent to the eye, only visible on a few days of the year due to the sediment in the sea water.
